A little about a lot: A brief introduction to SEO
SEO stands for "search engine optimization." It is the process of making changes to a website in order to improve its ranking on search engines like Google, Bing, and Safari.
When people search for something on a search engine, they are shown a list of websites that are most relevant to their search. SEO helps to make sure that a website appears near the top of this list (or ideally at the top), making it more likely that people will visit it.
There are many different ways to improve a website's SEO. Two of the most common include using keywords in the website's content and building backlinks.
How can SEO benefit my business?
One of the biggest benefits of SEO is that it can help to increase the amount of traffic to a website (there’s a strong argument for quality content over quantity which I’ll discuss in a bit). When a website appears at the top of a search engine's results, more people are likely to visit it. This can be especially beneficial for businesses, as more traffic to a website often means more customers and more sales.
SEO can help to build trust and credibility for a website. When a website appears at the top of a search engine's results, people are more likely to trust it as a credible source of information. This can be especially important for businesses, as trust and credibility can help to build a strong reputation and attract more customers.
Arguably, the most important factor of SEO is that it can help to improve a website's user experience. When a website is optimized for search engines, it is often also optimized for users. This means that the website is easy to navigate, has relevant content, and loads quickly. All of these factors can make a website more enjoyable for visitors, which can lead to more engagement and longer visit duration.
Before we continue, I’m going to quickly discuss quality of traffic over quantity of traffic.
Quality traffic refers to visitors who are actively searching for the products or services that your website offers. These visitors are more likely to convert into customers and generate revenue for your business. On the other hand, quantity traffic may not be relevant to your business and may not result in any conversions.
How can I start optimizing my site for SEO?
One of the most effective ways to improve a website's SEO is by writing blog posts (like this) or articles. Blogging is a great way to create fresh content for a website, which is something that search engines love. Blogging also provides a great opportunity to use keywords, which can help to improve a website's ranking on search engines and to get other websites to link back to you.
What are keywords?
Keywords are specific words or phrases that people use when searching for something on a search engine. These keywords are used by search engines to understand the content of a website and determine its relevance to a person's search. For example, if someone is searching for "red sneakers," a website that has the keyword "red sneakers" prominently featured in its content is more likely to appear at the top of the search engine's results.
When creating content for a website, it's important to use keywords that are relevant to the topic and that people are likely to use when searching for that topic. This will make it more likely that search engines will show the website to people who are searching for that topic. However, it’s very important to keep the content well-written and easy to read. Search engines also take into account the user experience, so a well-written post can help to improve a website's ranking, so do not “keyword-stuff” your content as this will not help your SEO efforts.
If your content is well-written, and most importantly, if it’s answering a users question, other websites will be more likely to link to your content. Which brings us onto backlinks.
If you take away anything from this blog post, it’s that search engines want content quality and relevance.
What are backlinks?
Backlinks are like recommendations for a website. They are links from other websites that lead to your website. Think of them like someone saying "I really like this website, you should check it out too." The more backlinks a website has, the more popular and reputable it is considered by search engines. Search engines use backlinks as a way to determine the quality and relevance of a website's content.
In other words, if many other websites are linking to a specific webpage, it must be valuable and relevant information. Therefore, having other websites link to your website can help improve your website's ranking on search engines, making it more likely that people will find it when they search for related topics.
Please note!
This blog post is intended for newcomers to SEO, and I’m conscious of bombarding you with information, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t make you aware of some common mistakes when implementing SEO strategies.
Regarding keywords, I mentioned this a little bit earlier, but do not keyword stuff.
Keyword stuffing is the practice of including an excessive number of keywords in a webpage's content, meta tags, or other elements in an effort to manipulate the page's ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs). This is considered a black hat SEO technique and is against the guidelines set by major search engines.
When a webpage is stuffed with keywords, the content becomes unreadable and irrelevant for users which ultimately leads to a poor user experience. Search engines algorithms are designed to identify and penalize websites that engage in keyword stuffing.
It's important to understand that keyword stuffing will not only harm your website ranking but also the reputation of your website. Instead, you should aim to use keywords in a natural and relevant way in the content and meta tags, and always prioritize the user experience.
Regarding backlinks, do not buy backlinks.
You might be tempted by various services offering backlinks that are “guaranteed” to improve your SEO, if you are please read the following:
Outside of the ethics behind a fair and honest search engine ecosystem, if search engines find out that a website has bought backlinks, they may penalize the website by decreasing its ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs) or even removing it from the index. This can result in a significant loss of traffic, visibility, and revenue for the website.
Additionally, the backlinks you buy may not be from reputable or relevant sources, and may in fact be from low-quality or spammy websites. These links can actually harm your website's reputation and ranking in the long run.
Instead of buying backlinks, it's important to focus on building natural and high-quality backlinks through content marketing, guest blogging, social media, and other legitimate methods. This will not only help to improve your website's ranking in search engines, but also build trust and credibility with both search engines and visitors.
Always remember - search engines are monstrously savvy pieces of software.
