Why it is okay to be a ‘Tech Luddite’ in 2024!

Elwyn Davies discusses the importance of embracing technology and overcoming the fear of computers in the digital age.

As someone who's been in the tech industry for over two decades, let me tell you a story that might sound familiar…

Picture this: you're faced with a computer screen, feeling utterly lost and overwhelmed by the digital realm. Well, you're not alone. I've noticed a common trend in my years working with clients, especially those who may not have grown up with technology at their fingertips.

Many declare their incompetence with computers before seeking help.

But here's the secret I've learned – it's absolutely okay to be a novice in the world of computers and technology.

The origins of the word ‘Luddite’

This term, derived from the early 19th-century English textile workers known as the Luddites, who protested against the technological advancements threatening their livelihoods, has evolved into a symbol of resistance to change. Much like the hesitant individuals facing computers today, the Luddites feared that machinery would render their skills obsolete. However, their legacy reminds us that resistance to change is a natural human response born out of a desire to protect what we hold dear.

Just as the Luddites stood firm in their beliefs, grappling with the onset of industrialization, modern-day "Luddites" might face an ever-evolving tech landscape with discomfort and apprehension.

“Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm”
- Winston Churchill

There are many ‘Churchillisms’ - quotes attributed to Winston Churchill that he may not have said, but I do hope this one is authentic as it is one of my favourites.

This quote hits home for me, highlighting the importance of bouncing back from setbacks with grit and a never-give-up attitude. The same approach is essential the tech world, where every wrong click eventually leads to the right one if you are willing to play the long game. Embracing failures as a right of passage is crucial.

So, remember that every stumble is just a pitstop on your road to success, each misstep a chance to learn and improve.

Embrace Your Digital Journey

Navigating the digital landscape can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Embracing your journey with technology, whether on a desktop, laptop, or mobile device, is about taking that first step. Technology is evolving rapidly, but it is also becoming more user-friendly and intuitive than ever before.

The key lies in owning your starting point and being open to learning at your own pace.

Overcoming Technological Hurdles

Transitioning from a self-proclaimed Luddite to a tech-savvy individual is a journey filled with ups and downs. It's essential to acknowledge that everyone starts somewhere – even tech masters were beginners once.

With the right guidance and patience, mastering the basics of operating systems and software becomes more achievable than you think.

"Do the benefits of learning outweigh the bumps along the way? Absolutely. It's all about taking that first step towards a more tech-savvy you." - Elwyn Davies

A case study close to home

I sometimes find that the most inspiring stories unfold right under our noses.

Take my 72-year-old father, a self-proclaimed Luddite who once shied away from anything tech-related. Here’s a farmer who can pick up and go with anything, from steel fabrication, engine maintenance and repair to bricklaying and plastering. With a curious, problem-solving approach to work (thankfully, a few traits I inherited), very few practical challenges had him stumped.

At the same time, he has little interest in computers, let alone social media platforms, and for years resisted the option of getting a smartphone. He finally took his giant leap into technology in 2023, and after a couple of months of frustration, he is now immersing himself in the world of Facebook and YouTube. He is walking proof that age or background is no barrier when it comes to learning technology. It’s 100% a mindset thing.

Just like my old man, we all have the potential to surprise ourselves with our capacity to take on new challenges.

Key Takeaways:

  • Embrace your journey with technology, starting from the basics.

  • Overcome the fear of computers by being open to learning at your own pace.

  • Remember, enhancing your tech skills and reap the benefits is never too late.

At first, technology may seem intimidating, but with the right mindset, guidance and support, you'll confidently navigate the rocky road of your digital odyssey.
