Stay Connected! - The origin of the Internet's most infamous Dinosaur

PixelHaze Creative Director Ken Rees shares the origin of the internet’s most infamous Dinosaur.

Stay Connected

The infamous internet Dinosaur known as ‘Stan’ was created by Sebastien Gabriel, a visual designer who wanted to make the frustration of losing your internet connection more bearable. It’s an icon you hope people will see as little as possible.

Why the T-Rex? The idea behind the Dinosaur itself is that, without an internet connection, the user feels as if they have been sent back to the Stone Age, or rather, ‘Dinosaur age’. In 2014, Google updated this Error screen with an Easter Egg, the icon could now be controlled as if it were an arcade machine. The connection error screen became even less infuriating once a game was involved, with some users often getting more annoyed when they connected back to the internet and lost all their progress in the game.

Other less known Google Easter Eggs include: ‘Do a Barrel Roll!’, ‘The Answer to Life & Everything’ and my personal favourite, ‘Google Gravity’

We created our own concept of this game and what would happen if your stayed disconnected for too long, remind yourself to stay connected with our new Godzilla inspired poster design.
